What Are Unlinked Brand Mentions? SEO and AI Search

Definition

Unlinked brand mentionsAn unlinked brand mention is any place your brand is named without a link to your website: in an article, review, forum post, or AI-generated answer. In SEO, unlinked mentions are a link-building opportunity. In AI search, they count on their own, because AI engines read brand names in text whether or not they're linked.

How Searchable measures this

In Searchable, the Mentions & Citations view lists every tracked answer that mentions your brand next to the sources that answer cited, so you can pick out answers that mention you without citing your site, and see which third-party pages they relied on instead.

Unlinked brand mentions in SEO

In traditional SEO, an unlinked mention is a page that names your brand, product, or founder without linking to your site. A news article that quotes your CEO, a roundup that lists your tool, or a blog post that recommends you in passing can all be unlinked mentions.

SEO teams treat them as an easy link-building opportunity. The publisher already knows your brand, so a short, polite request to add a link to the relevant page is an easier ask than cold outreach. The process is simple: find the mention, check the page has no link, then ask the author or editor.

In AI search, the link matters much less. AI engines read the text of a page to learn what a brand is and who it competes with, and a name in the text carries that information with or without a link.

A roundup that names you as a top option teaches an engine the same thing whether the name is blue or black.

The term also has a second meaning in AI search. An AI answer can mention your brand without citing your website, either because the engine used other pages as sources or because it answered from training data with no sources at all. This is the unlinked mention you see in AI brand mentions tracking.

Linked vs unlinked mentions in AI answers

A linked mention names your brand and cites one of your pages in the same answer. An unlinked mention names you, but the sources point elsewhere.

Unlinked mentions still count as visibility. The reader sees your name as a recommendation, and some will look you up afterward, but those visits arrive as branded searches or direct traffic and won't show up as AI referral traffic.

Why unlinked mentions in AI answers matter

The cost of an unlinked mention is control over how you're described. When an engine cites a review, a forum thread, or a competitor's comparison page instead of your own, that page decides your price and who you're compared with. If it's outdated or written by a competitor, the answer inherits the problem.

Unlinked mentions also show where to focus. A brand that's often mentioned but rarely cited has awareness without a page engines trust on that topic, so the gap is usually a missing or weak page. A brand rarely mentioned at all has a coverage problem, which earned media work addresses.

How to find and use unlinked brand mentions

For web mentions, three methods cover most of what's out there:

  1. Google search operators. Search your brand name in quotes and exclude your own site, for example "Your Brand" -site:yourbrand.com. Repeat for product names and key people.
  2. Google Alerts. Set alerts for the same terms to catch new mentions as they're published.
  3. Monitoring tools. Media monitoring and backlink tools can list pages that mention your brand and filter out the ones that already link to you.

For AI answers, run your tracked prompts and compare the answers that mention you with the sources they cite. Where a cited page mentions you without a link, ask for one. Where a cited page leaves you out or describes you wrongly, contact the publisher with an update.

Frequently asked questions

They help indirectly. A mention builds awareness and can lead people to search for your brand, but a link is what passes traditional link value. That's why SEO teams often ask publishers to turn a mention into a link.

AI brand mentionsAI brand mentions are the times an AI engine like ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews names your brand in an answer. A mention counts whether or not the answer links to your website. That's the difference from a citation, where the engine credits a specific page as its source.AI citationsAI citations are the links an AI engine attaches to its answer to show which web pages the information came from. Each citation credits a specific URL. A brand mention is different: the engine names a company in the text, even when it doesn't link to that company's site.Earned mediaEarned media is coverage of your brand that other people publish without being paid, such as press articles, reviews, forum discussions, social posts, and mentions in industry roundups. It sits alongside owned media (channels you control, like your website) and paid media (advertising).Sources vs citationsIn AI search, sources are the pages an AI engine used to write its answer, and citations are the links that actually appear in the answer for the reader to see. The two overlap, but they aren't the same: an engine often reads more pages than it shows, so a page can shape an answer without being credited in it.AI share of voiceAI share of voice is the percentage of all brand mentions in AI-generated answers that belong to your brand, measured across a fixed set of prompts. Each brand counts once per answer it appears in. If brands are named 200 times across your tracked answers and 50 of those mentions are yours, your share of voice is 25%.Branded vs unbranded promptsBranded prompts are AI questions that name your company, such as "Is Acme good for agencies?" Unbranded prompts describe a need without naming any brand, such as "best project software for agencies." Tracking unbranded prompts shows whether AI engines recommend you to buyers who don't know you yet.
