# What Is Prompt Tracking? How It Works for AI Visibility

**Definition:** Prompt tracking is running a fixed set of buyer questions through AI engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity on a schedule, then recording which brands and sources appear in each answer and where they rank. Comparing the same prompts over time shows whether your AI visibility is rising or falling.

## How prompt tracking works

Prompt tracking takes the idea behind keyword rank tracking and applies it to AI answers. You pick the questions that matter, run them through each AI engine, and record what comes back. Then you repeat the same run on a schedule so the results can be compared over time.

A prompt tracking setup has four parts:

1. **A prompt set.** The questions your buyers type into AI engines, such as "best CRM for small law firms" or "HubSpot vs Pipedrive for agencies."
2. **Engines.** Every AI platform your buyers use. ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews source their answers differently, so each engine needs its own results.
3. **A schedule.** The same prompts run daily or weekly, unchanged, so a change in the numbers reflects a change in the answers.
4. **Answer records.** For every response, which brands were named and in what order, how they were described, and which pages were cited.

From those records you get the metrics that summarize AI visibility, including [visibility score](https://www.searchable.com/glossary/ai-visibility-score), [share of voice](https://www.searchable.com/glossary/ai-share-of-voice), average position, and citation counts.

## Why answers need repeated runs

AI engines don't give the same answer every time. Ask the same question twice and the list of recommended brands can change. [A 2026 state of AI search report](https://www.airops.com/report/the-2026-state-of-ai-search) found that only 30% of brands stayed visible from one AI answer to the next, and just 20% stayed present across five consecutive runs.

So prompt tracking depends on repetition. One manual check is a snapshot that may not match your usual visibility, and running each prompt several times per check, then comparing checks across weeks, is what separates real movement from noise.

## How to build a prompt set

Most of the value in prompt tracking comes from choosing the right prompts.

- **Start from buyer questions.** Sales calls and support tickets show how people describe the problem your product solves. Write prompts the way a buyer would type them.
- **Group prompts by topic.** Organize the set around product lines or use cases. Roughly 15 prompts per priority topic gives you enough variety in phrasing without padding the set.
- **Keep branded and unbranded prompts separate.** A prompt that names your brand will almost always return it. Across 3,736 brands tracked in Searchable (30 days to September 17, 2026), the median brand was named in 93% of answers to branded prompts and 7% of answers to unbranded ones. See [branded vs unbranded prompts](https://www.searchable.com/glossary/branded-vs-unbranded-prompts).
- **Include comparison prompts.** "X vs Y" and "alternatives to X" prompts show how engines position you against a specific competitor.
- **Freeze the set between checks.** Adding or removing prompts changes your numbers. If you do change the set, note the date so you don't mistake a change in measurement for a real shift.

## Prompt tracking vs keyword rank tracking

| | Keyword rank tracking | Prompt tracking |
|---|---|---|
| Input | A short keyword | A full question or request |
| Output | A ranked list of links | A written answer that names brands and cites sources |
| What you record | Your URL's position | Brand mentions in order, plus the cited sources |
| Stability | Positions shift gradually | Answers can change from one run to the next |
| Sampling | One check a day is usually enough | Each check needs repeated runs |

You need both. A page can rank well in Google and still be missing from AI answers on the same topic, so one doesn't tell you much about the other.

## What prompt tracking results tell you

After a few weeks of data, prompt tracking answers practical questions:

- Which topics AI engines associate with your brand, and which they hand to competitors
- Which competitors show up most often in the answers you're missing from
- Which pages engines cite when they answer your buyers, including third-party reviews and lists
- Whether a change to your site, or new coverage somewhere else, shifted how engines answer

Those findings point to concrete work, like getting onto a comparison page that engines cite often, or answering a buyer question your site doesn't cover yet.

## How to run prompt tracking at scale

Tracking by hand works for a handful of prompts and breaks down quickly after that. At 30 prompts with three runs each on four engines, that's 360 answers to read and log every check. [Searchable Prompts](https://www.searchable.com/features/prompts) runs your prompt set across the major AI platforms, daily for most accounts, with prompts grouped by topic. Click any score to open the answer behind it, including where your brand ranks and which domains were cited. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is prompt tracking used for?

Prompt tracking measures how AI engines answer the questions your buyers ask. Teams use it to see whether their brand is mentioned and which competitors appear instead, and to check whether that changes after they publish or update content.

### How many prompts should you track?

Size the set by topic. Roughly 15 prompts per priority topic gives you enough phrasings to cover how buyers ask about it, and you only need to cut prompts whose wording is nearly identical.

### How often should you run prompt tracking?

Weekly is a sensible minimum, and daily tracking helps when you're watching a launch or a content change. Answers vary from run to run, so run each prompt more than once per check and judge the trend across several weeks.

### Does prompt tracking show what real users ask ChatGPT?

No. AI companies don't share user conversations, so prompt tracking measures how engines answer the prompts you choose. That's why the quality of your prompt set decides how useful the results are.

### What is the difference between prompt tracking and keyword rank tracking?

Rank tracking records where a URL sits in a list of search results. Prompt tracking records whether your brand appears inside a written AI answer, how it's described, and which sources the engine cites, and because answers change between runs, it needs repeated sampling.

### What should you look for in a prompt tracking tool?

Check that it covers every AI engine your buyers use and repeats each prompt on a schedule. It should also keep branded prompts apart from unbranded ones and let you open the full answer behind each score, so you can see why a number moved.

## Related terms

- [AI visibility score](https://www.searchable.com/glossary/ai-visibility-score): An AI visibility score is the percentage of tracked AI answers that mention your brand. You divide the answers that name you by every answer in your tracked prompt set, including answers that name no brand at all. If your brand appears in 30 of 100 tracked answers, your AI visibility score is 30%.
- [AI share of voice](https://www.searchable.com/glossary/ai-share-of-voice): AI share of voice is the percentage of all brand mentions in AI-generated answers that belong to your brand, measured across a fixed set of prompts. Each brand counts once per answer it appears in. If brands are named 200 times across your tracked answers and 50 of those mentions are yours, your share of voice is 25%.
- [Branded vs unbranded prompts](https://www.searchable.com/glossary/branded-vs-unbranded-prompts): Branded prompts are AI questions that name your company, such as "Is Acme good for agencies?" Unbranded prompts describe a need without naming any brand, such as "best project software for agencies." Tracking unbranded prompts shows whether AI engines recommend you to buyers who don't know you yet.
- [AI brand mentions](https://www.searchable.com/glossary/ai-brand-mentions): AI brand mentions are the times an AI engine like ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews names your brand in an answer. A mention counts whether or not the answer links to your website. That's the difference from a citation, where the engine credits a specific page as its source.
- [AI citations](https://www.searchable.com/glossary/ai-citations): AI citations are the links an AI engine attaches to its answer to show which web pages the information came from. Each citation credits a specific URL. A brand mention is different: the engine names a company in the text, even when it doesn't link to that company's site.
- [AI visibility tracking](https://www.searchable.com/blog/ai-visibility-tracking): Measuring AI visibility over time by running the same prompts across engines and comparing mentions, citations, and positions from run to run.
