AI brand mentionsAI brand mentions are the times an AI engine like ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews names your brand in an answer. A mention counts whether or not the answer links to your website. That's the difference from a citation, where the engine credits a specific page as its source.
How Searchable measures this
Searchable counts a mention once per answer, however many times the engine repeats your name, and reports mention rate separately for each engine and for branded and unbranded prompts. Tracked prompts run on a schedule (daily on most plans) across the engines you choose, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Grok, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode.
How AI brand mentions work
Ask an AI engine "which project management tools work best for agencies" and the answer usually names a short list of brands. Every brand on that list has earned an AI brand mention.
The engine decides who to name based on what it knows about the category, and that knowledge comes from two places:
- Training data. Everything the model read before its knowledge cutoff, from reviews and forum threads to comparison articles.
- Live retrieval. When the engine searches the web at answer time, it pulls in current pages and names the brands those pages describe.
A brand that those sources discuss often and consistently is more likely to be named. A brand they rarely discuss tends to be left out, even if its own website is strong.
AI brand mentions vs AI citations
Mentions and citations are easy to mix up because they often appear in the same answer.
| AI brand mention | AI citation | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The answer names your brand | The answer links to a page as a source |
| What it shows | Whether AI recommends you | Whether AI uses your content |
| Can happen without the other | Yes | Yes |
The gap between the two tells you where to work. If engines mention you but cite other sites, third-party pages are shaping how you're described. If engines cite your pages but recommend competitors, your content is useful to them without making the case for your brand. AI citations covers the citation side in more detail.
Linked vs unlinked mentions
A linked mention names your brand and cites your website in the same answer. An unlinked mention names you without a link to your site, either because the engine cites other sources or because it answered from training data with no sources at all.
Unlinked mentions still count. The reader sees your name as a recommendation, and some will look you up afterward, though those visits won't show up as AI referral clicks. See unlinked brand mentions for how to find them and what they tell you.
The metrics behind AI brand mentions
Counting mentions is only the start. These metrics turn the count into something you can act on:
- Mention rate is the share of tracked answers that name your brand. If you appear in 30 of 100 answers, your mention rate is 30%, which is the same idea as an AI visibility score.
- Mention position is where your brand appears in the answer. Being named first in a list of five puts you in front of the reader before anyone else.
- Share of mentions is your mentions as a percentage of all brand mentions in the answers, better known as AI share of voice.
Sentiment sits on top of all of these. A mention that describes your product inaccurately can do more harm than no mention, so track AI brand sentiment alongside the counts.
Why the prompt matters
The prompts you track decide what your mention numbers mean. A prompt that names your brand, like "is [your brand] good for agencies," returns your brand almost every time. A prompt that only describes a need shows whether AI recommends you to people who don't know you yet.
The gap is large. Across 3,736 brands tracked in Searchable (30 days to September 17, 2026), the median brand was named in 93% of answers to branded prompts and 7% of answers to unbranded ones. Keep the two groups separate, as covered in branded vs unbranded prompts.
How to track AI brand mentions
Tracking mentions reliably takes more than a few manual checks:
- Build a fixed set of unbranded prompts from real buyer questions, grouped by topic.
- Run each prompt several times per check, because the same prompt can name different brands from one run to the next.
- Track each engine separately. ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews choose and weigh their sources in different ways.
- Record competitors too, so you can see who is named when you're not.
Searchable's Mentions & Citations view records every answer that names your brand or a competitor. It charts mention and citation trends over time and shows the answer behind each number. Average position and share of voice sit in the Visibility view next to it. How to earn more AI brand mentions
Start with the answers that leave you out and look at which sources they cite. Those pages are shaping the recommendation, and a cited comparison or review that doesn't include you is a specific gap to close. After that:
- Get covered on third-party sites. Reviews and industry roundups are common sources for recommendation answers.
- Describe your product plainly on your own site. Say who it's for and how it compares, so engines have clear facts to repeat.
- Keep your facts consistent across the web. When pricing or category descriptions differ from site to site, an engine has a harder time describing you with confidence.
Mention rates move slowly, so measure the effect over several weeks rather than after a single change.
Frequently asked questions
A mention is when the answer names your brand, and a citation is when the engine links to a page as a source. You can be mentioned without being cited, and your site can be cited in an answer that recommends a competitor.
